1.1.27
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.27
भूतादिपादव्यपदेशोपपत्तेश् चैवम्
bhūtādipādavyapadeśopapatteś caivam
The line
And because naming earth and the rest as feet fits, the light is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) in this way.
नेपालीमा
र पृथ्वी आदिलाई पाउ भन्न मिल्ने भएकाले ज्योति यसरी ब्रह्म हो।
Where it sits
jyotiḥ (ज्योतिः) from 1.1.25 is still the subject. evam reaches back to tathā (तथा) in 1.1.26. The feet are the caraṇa (चरण) of 1.1.25, now filled in as the elements.
Split: bhūta-ādi-pāda-vyapadeśa-upapatteḥ (भूत-आदि-पाद-व्यपदेश-उपपत्तेः) + ca (च) + evam (एवम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| bhūta-ādi-pāda-vyapadeśa-upapatteḥ (भूत-आदि-पाद-व्यपदेश-उपपत्तेः) | ablative singular, feminine | because the naming of earth and the rest as feet fits |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| evam (एवम्) | indeclinable | in this way, as Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) |
The phrases
bhūta-ādi (भूत-आदि) is earth and what follows: the elements, the worlds. They are called feet. upapatti is fitness. Calling the elements feet fits the brahman (ब्रह्मन्) whose body is the world. It does not fit a metre, except by a second twist.
evam points back to the reply of the previous line: this is how the passage is to be taken. ca adds the fitness of the feet to the placing of the mind.
Sanskrit in this line
The long compound is one ablative. Read it from upapatti. Before ca, the visarga of -eḥ (-एः) is recited as ś (श्): upapatteś (उपपत्तेश्) ca. ca plus evam is caivam.
Say it back
Unpack the compound from the end: fitness, of a naming, of feet, of the elements.
Next
1.1.28. Different phrasings of the teaching do not split the light away from Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
