1.1.7

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.7

तन्निष्ठस्य मोक्षोपदेशात्

tanniṣṭhasya mokṣopadeśāt

The line

Because release is taught for the one established in that, the cause is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).

नेपालीमा

त्यसमा प्रतिष्ठितका लागि मुक्ति सिकाइएकाले कारण ब्रह्म हो।

Where it sits

The denial of aśabdam (अशब्दम्) from 1.1.5 is still in force. tat is that same cause. The three readings agree on the reason. They differ on what the release is a release into, along the lines of 1.1.1.

Split: tad-niṣṭhasya (तद्-निष्ठस्य) + mokṣa-upadeśāt (मोक्ष-उपदेशात्)

The words

tad-niṣṭhasya (तद्-निष्ठस्य)genitive singular, masculineof the one whose stand is in that
mokṣa-upadeśāt (मोक्ष-उपदेशात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause release is taught

The phrases

tat in the compound is the cause that saw. niṣṭhā (निष्ठा) is a firm standing. For the one who stands there, the passage teaches a way out: the one who has a teacher comes to the end of not knowing.

That fruit belongs to knowing this cause as the self. It is not the Sāṃkhya (सांख्य) fruit of telling a spectator off from an unsentient nature. The ablative adds a reason to 1.1.5.

Sanskrit in this line

tad-niṣṭha (तद्-निष्ठ) is a bahuvrīhi (बहुव्रीहि), 'he whose niṣṭhā (निष्ठा) is tat'. The genitive marks whose release is taught. upadeśa (उपदेश) is masculine, so the ablative is -āt (-आत्).

Say it back

Say who tanniṣṭha (तन्निष्ठ) is, and what is taught of him.
