1.1.9
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.9
प्रतिज्ञाविरोधात्
pratijñāvirodhāt
The line
The pradhāna (प्रधान) reading fails because it contradicts the opening promise.
नेपालीमा
प्रधानको पढाइ बिग्रन्छ, किनकि यो आरम्भको प्रतिज्ञासँग बाझिन्छ।
Where it sits
The subject denied since 1.1.5 is still the pradhāna (प्रधान). pratijñā (प्रतिज्ञा) is the promise of that same Śvetaketu (श्वेतकेतु) passage, not a new text.
Split: pratijñā-virodhāt (प्रतिज्ञा-विरोधात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| pratijñā-virodhāt (प्रतिज्ञा-विरोधात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of conflict with the promise |
The phrases
The promise to Śvetaketu (श्वेतकेतु) is that by knowing one thing, the unheard becomes heard, the unthought thought, the unknown known. Clay is the example: know the clay, and the clay things are known as clay.
A pradhāna (प्रधान) sitting beside separate souls does not make one knowing cover all. The promise and that picture fight each other. virodha is the fight. The ablative is another reason for the denial in 1.1.5.
Sanskrit in this line
pratijñā (प्रतिज्ञा) is feminine, virodha masculine, and the compound takes the gender of the last member. One ablative, no verb.
Say it back
Say the promise in plain words: one thing known, all of that kind known.
