1.2.10
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.10
प्रकरणाच् च
prakaraṇāc ca
The line
And because of the context, the eater is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
नेपालीमा
र प्रकरणका कारण खाने ब्रह्म हो।
Where it sits
attā (अत्ता) from 1.2.9 is still the subject. The context is the Kaṭha (कठ), not a new book.
Split: prakaraṇāt (प्रकरणात्) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| prakaraṇāt (प्रकरणात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of the context, the topic in hand |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
The phrases
prakaraṇa (प्रकरण) is the stretch of text one is in. Naciketas asked about what happens when a person dies, and the teaching has turned to the self that is not killed. The eater-verse sits in that stretch.
ca adds context to the 'all beings as food' of the previous line. A verse about the pradhāna (प्रधान), or about digestion, would be out of that context.
Sanskrit in this line
prakaraṇa (प्रकरण) is neuter. Before ca, t is heard as c.
Say it back
Say prakaraṇa (प्रकरण) as 'what Naciketas was asking', in one clause.
