1.3.10

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.10

सा च प्रशासनात्

sā ca praśāsanāt

The line

And that holding is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्)'s, because of the command.

नेपालीमा

र त्यो धारण ब्रह्मको हो, आदेशका कारण।

Where it sits

dhṛti (धृति) from 1.3.9 is sā (सा). akṣaram (अक्षरम्) remains the one who holds. The command is in Gārgī (गार्गी)'s same question, the series 'at whose command'.

Split: sā (सा) + ca (च) + praśāsanāt (प्रशासनात्)

The words

WordGrammarSense
sā (सा)nominative singular, femininethat, the holding
ca (च)indeclinableand
praśāsanāt (प्रशासनात्)ablative singular, neuterbecause of the command

The phrases

sā (सा) is feminine, so it picks up dhṛti (धृति), the holding, not the neuter akṣaram (अक्षरम्). The holding is brahman (ब्रह्मन्)'s because of praśāsana (प्रशासन), the ruling. At the command of the imperishable, sun and moon, heaven and earth, moments and hours stand apart.

An unsentient cause does not command. ca adds the command to the bare holding.

Sanskrit in this line

sā (सा) is the feminine of tad. praśāsana (प्रशासन) is neuter, from pra plus śās (शास्), 'to rule'. The ablative is the reason sā (सा) belongs where the sūtra (सूत्र) places it.

Say it back

Gloss sā (सा) before you move. It is the holding, not the imperishable.

1.3.11. Other natures are excluded, so the imperishable is not the pradhāna (प्रधान) under another name.
