1.3.16

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.16

प्रसिद्धेश् च

prasiddheś ca

The line

And because he is the well-known one, the small space is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).

नेपालीमा

र ऊ प्रसिद्ध एक भएकाले सानो आकाश ब्रह्म हो।

Where it sits

daharaḥ (दहरः) from 1.3.13 is still the subject. prasiddha reaches back to the brahman (ब्रह्मन्) of 1.1.2, the one from whom origin and the rest come, which is what 'holding heaven and earth' amounts to.

Split: prasiddheḥ (प्रसिद्धेः) + ca (च)

The phrases

prasiddha is what is already established in the Vedānta (वेदान्त) sentences. Space in the heart, holding the world, called the self and the deathless, is that well-known brahman (ब्रह्मन्), not the element and not a pocket of air.

ca adds this familiarity to the holding. The same appeal to the well-known was made at 1.2.1 for the being made of mind.

Sanskrit in this line

prasiddhi, or the feminine abstract used here, ablative prasiddheḥ (प्रसिद्धेः). Before ca, ś (श्): prasiddheś (प्रसिद्धेश्) ca.

Say it back

Say prasiddha as 'the brahman (ब्रह्मन्) we already know by the opening mark'.
