1.3.22

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.22

अपि च स्मर्यते

api ca smaryate

The line

And it is also remembered in smṛti (स्मृति).

नेपालीमा

र यो स्मृतिमा पनि सम्झिएको छ।

Where it sits

The subject remembered is the dahara of 1.3.13, carried through the imitation of 1.3.21. The same appeal to smṛti (स्मृति) was made at 1.2.6. This closes the small space.

Split: api (अपि) + ca (च) + smaryate (स्मर्यते)

smaryate (स्मर्यते)present passive, third person singularit is remembered

The phrases

smaryate has no noun beside it. The thing remembered is the identification just made: the one in the heart, small and also great, is the lord. smṛti (स्मृति) says so.

api ca means 'and this too', an extra support, not a new argument with a new subject. The passive has the tradition as the implied speaker.

Sanskrit in this line

smaryate is the passive of smṛ (स्मृ). api and ca together are the sūtra (सूत्र)'s way of saying 'as a further point'. Neither declines.

Say it back

Say what is remembered, since the line does not repeat the noun.
