1.3.24

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.24

हृद्यपेक्षया तु मनुष्याधिकारत्वात्

hṛdyapekṣayā tu manuṣyādhikāratvāt

The line

But the thumb is with reference to the heart, because the human is the one who is eligible.

नेपालीमा

तर बुढीऔंला हृदयलाई लिएर हो, किनकि अधिकारी मानव हो।

Where it sits

pramitaḥ (प्रमितः) from 1.3.23 is the one whose measure is being explained. hṛdi (हृदि) is the place. The eligibility of the human is the new word, and Bādarāyaṇa (बादरायण) will extend it in the next line. The three readings agree the thumb does not bound him. They differ, as at the small space, on whether the heart-form is only for meditation or is his real presence.

Split: hṛdi-apekṣayā (हृदि-अपेक्षया) + tu (तु) + manuṣya-adhikāratvāt (मनुष्य-अधिकारत्वात्)

The phrases

The objection that opens under this line is about the measure. How is the all-pervading one the size of a thumb? apekṣā (अपेक्षा) is reference. The reference is hṛdi (हृदि), to the heart, which in a human body is spoken of as a thumb's span. The measure is the abode, not his size.

The ablative gives the reason the thumb, rather than some other measure, is chosen. manuṣya-adhikāra (मनुष्य-अधिकार) is the human's eligibility for the Veda and for these meditations. The teaching is phrased for him. tu marks the turn from the bare measure to this explanation. The same sentence will be used, in the next line, as the start of a doubt about the gods.

Sanskrit in this line

hṛdi (हृदि) is the locative used as the first member of the compound, 'with reference to what is in the heart'. apekṣā (अपेक्षा) is feminine, instrumental -ayā (-अया). adhikāra-tva (अधिकार-त्व) is neuter.

Say it back

Explain the thumb without denying the previous line. The word 'lord' still stands.

1.3.25. Bādarāyaṇa (बादरायण) holds that those above the human are eligible too, because it is possible.
