1.3.29

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.29

समाननामरूपत्वाच् चावृत्तावप्यविरोधो दर्शनात् स्मृतेश् च

samānanāmarūpatvāc cāvṛttāv apy avirodho darśanāt smṛteś ca

The line

And because name and form are the same, even in the repetition of creation there is no conflict, from scripture and from smṛti (स्मृति).

र नाम र रूप उही भएकाले सृष्टि दोहोरिँदा पनि द्वन्द्व छैन, शास्त्रबाट र स्मृतिबाट।

Where it sits

nityatvam of the word, from 1.3.28, is what avirodha protects. āvṛttau (आवृत्तौ) is the cycle the objection was worried about. The gods' eligibility is still the discussion.

Split: samāna-nāma-rūpatvāt (समान-नाम-रूपत्वात्) + ca (च) + āvṛttau (आवृत्तौ) + api (अपि) + avirodhaḥ (अविरोधः) + darśanāt (दर्शनात्) + smṛteḥ (स्मृतेः) + ca (च)

The phrases

The objector can still say: when a creation ends, the gods end, and the next creation's Indra is someone else, so the word breaks. āvṛtti (आवृत्ति) is that repetition of creations.

The reply: name and form are the same again. The lord brings forth the same names and the same forms. So even in the repetition there is no conflict, avirodha. This is seen, darśanāt (दर्शनात्), in the texts that say he remembers the previous creation, and smṛti (स्मृति) says the same. The two ablatives at the end are the sources of that statement.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) jams this line into one string. Split ca, āvṛttau (आवृत्तौ), api, and avirodhaḥ (अविरोधः). samāna-nāma-rūpa-tva (समान-नाम-रूप-त्व) is one ablative. āvṛttau (आवृत्तौ) is locative of āvṛtti (आवृत्ति). api before a vowel is apy. smṛteḥ (स्मृतेः) before ca is smṛteś (स्मृतेश्) ca.

Say it back

Say the picture: the next creation is not a new vocabulary. The names come back.
