1.3.31

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.31

ज्योतिषि भावाच् च

jyotiṣi bhāvāc ca

The line

And because the meditation is a being in the light, Jaimini denies the eligibility.

नेपालीमा

र ध्यान ज्योतिमा रहने कुरा भएकाले जैमिनि अधिकारलाई अस्वीकार गर्छन्।

Where it sits

Jaimini's anadhikāra (अनधिकार) from 1.3.30 is still the conclusion. jyotiṣi (ज्योतिषि) bhāva (भाव) is his second reason, still inside the honey-teaching. Do not give this line to Bādarāyaṇa (बादरायण).

Split: jyotiṣi (ज्योतिषि) + bhāvāt (भावात्) + ca (च)

The words

WordGrammarSense
jyotiṣi (ज्योतिषि)locative singular, neuterin the light
bhāvāt (भावात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause of being, because the meditation consists in being
ca (च)indeclinableand

The phrases

In that honey-teaching, the fruit is a being in the light, a becoming of the light of the sun. bhāva (भाव) is that being. jyotiṣi (ज्योतिषि) is where, or as what, one comes to be.

ca continues Jaimini. A god who is already that light has no room for a meditation whose fruit is to become it. The reason supplements asaṃbhava (असंभव).

Sanskrit in this line

jyotis, locative jyotiṣi (ज्योतिषि). bhāva (भाव) is masculine. Before ca, t is heard as c.

Say it back

Keep this reason on Jaimini's side of the argument.

Next

1.3.32. Bādarāyaṇa (बादरायण) holds that the eligibility is there, because the text has it.
