1.4.1

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.1

आनुमानिकमप्येकेषामिति चेन् न शरीररूपकविन्यस्तगृहीतेर् दर्शयति च

ānumānikam apy ekeṣām iti cen na śarīrarūpakavinyastagṛhīter darśayati ca

The line

If you say that some recensions also teach the inferred pradhāna (प्रधान), no, because the word is taken up inside the figure of the body, and the text shows that.

नेपालीमा

यदि केही शाखाले अनुमान गरिएको प्रधान पनि सिकाउँछन् भन्छौ भने, होइन, किनकि शब्द शरीरको रूपकभित्र लिइएको छ, र पाठले त्यो देखाउँछ।

Where it sits

A new passage, the Kaṭha (कठ) chariot. The pradhāna (प्रधान) is the rival again, as at 1.1.5. Śaṅkara (शङ्कर) takes the unmanifest as the subtle body. Rāmānuja (रामानुज) allows a causal state of the world that still depends on the lord, and refuses an independent pradhāna (प्रधान). Madhva takes the unmanifest as matter that never stands free of Viṣṇu (विष्णु). The next line says 'the subtle'.

Split: ānumānikam (आनुमानिकम्) + api (अपि) + ekeṣām (एकेषाम्) + iti (इति) + cet (चेत्) + na (न) + śarīra-rūpaka-vinyasta-gṛhīteḥ (शरीर-रूपक-विन्यस्त-गृहीतेः) + darśayati (दर्शयति) + ca (च)

The phrases

Some recensions, the objector says, mention the unmanifest, and the Sāṃkhya (सांख्य) pradhāna (प्रधान) is exactly the unmanifest one infers. The Kaṭha (कठ) series runs: objects beyond the senses, mind beyond objects, intellect beyond mind, the great self beyond intellect, the unmanifest beyond the great, the person beyond the unmanifest, and nothing beyond the person. ekeṣām (एकेषाम्) is 'in some'. ānumānikam (आनुमानिकम्) api is 'the inferred one too'.

The reply is na. The series is set inside a rūpaka (रूपक), a figure, of the body as a chariot. gṛhīti (गृहीति) is the taking up of a word. What is taken up is vinyasta, placed, in that figure. The unmanifest there is a term in the figure of one person's make-up, not the cosmic pradhāna (प्रधान). ca: and the text itself shows this, darśayati (दर्शयति), by telling the figure.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) already marks the long compound with hyphens. It is one ablative, feminine because gṛhīti (गृहीति) is feminine. cet before na is cen. ekeṣām (एकेषाम्) is genitive plural of eka used as 'some'.

Say it back

Say the chariot series down to 'nothing beyond the person'. Then say the word avyakta is inside the figure.
