Gāndharva / The birth of the rāga

The birth of the rāga (राग)

Summary

Mataṅga (मतङ्ग) is asked what the word rāga (राग) means, and he answers with a derivation. By a particular svara (स्वर) and varṇa (वर्ण), or by a difference of sound, that by which someone is colored is a rāga (राग). The sound that colors people's minds is declared a rāga (राग). From rañjana (रञ्जन), coloring, a rāga (राग) is born. The classroom sentence rañjayati (रञ्जयति) iti (इति) rāgaḥ (रागः) is that derivation. This edition does not print those three words as their own sentence.

The question and the answer are Bṛhaddeśī (बृहद्देशी) 278 and 280 through 283, in the same Trivandrum text as the opening. The notes that do the coloring are the seven notes. Hear a rāga (राग) in Eastern theory and on the rāga (राग) page. The practice rooms live outside this library, so this page cannot put a link back inside them.
