Barre & movable
On ukulele, “barre” is often a partial barre — index across two or three strings — not a full six-string clamp. This page is the technique: how to make one finger hold two or three strings down cleanly. What those grips are worth musically, and how far they slide, is Movable shapes.
How a barre actually works
A flat finger is the wrong tool: the pad has a soft dip in the middle exactly where a string needs support, which is why the middle string of a three-string barre is the one that buzzes. Four adjustments, in the order worth trying:
- Roll the finger slightly toward the nut so the harder edge beside the nail takes the strings, not the soft centre of the pad.
- Move closer to the fret. A barre a few millimetres behind the fret wire needs far more force than one right against it.
- Pull, don't squeeze. The thumb behind the neck and the arm's weight do the work; a pinch between thumb and finger tires out in seconds.
- Slide the finger along until the buzzing string sits under a firmer part of it. Every hand has a slightly different sweet spot; find yours once and remember it.
Check your work one string at a time: play each string of the grip on its own and listen for the dead one. Strumming the whole chord hides which string is failing.
Bb — the gateway major
Index covers E and A at fret 1; middle and ring fill G and C. Slide the whole grip up the neck to name new majors.
Bm — the gateway minor
Index barre across C–E–A at fret 2; pinky on G fret 4. Slide for other minors.
String-by-string check
Hold B♭ (3 2 1 1) and pick each string on its own, G to A. The two barred strings, E and A, are the ones to listen to: a dull E means the index is flat on its soft centre; a buzzing A means the index has slid back from the fret.
A|----------1-- E|-------1----- C|----2-------- G|-3-----------
The full barre — four strings, four chords
Lay the index across all four strings at fret 2 and nothing else: that is Bm7, the open Am7 moved up two frets. Now leave the barre down and add one finger on the A string. Each one turns it into a different D chord, because the A string is where the C-shape keeps its root.
Bm7 2 2 2 2 · D 2 2 2 5 · Dmaj7 2 2 2 4 · D7 2 2 2 3.
A|-2-|-5-|-4-|-3-- E|-2-|-2-|-2-|-2-- C|-2-|-2-|-2-|-2-- G|-2-|-2-|-2-|-2--
This is the full barre worth owning first: every string under one finger, and the pinky free to change the chord. Move it to fret 4 and the same four are C♯m7, E, Emaj7 and E7.
Barres in a song
A barre only counts once you can land it in time. Two progressions, each with one barre among open chords. In F, B♭ is the IV and the only barre: F 2 0 1 0 · B♭ 3 2 1 1 · C 0 0 0 3 · F 2 0 1 0.
A|-0--0-|-1--1-|-3--3-|-0--0-- E|-1--1-|-1--1-|-0--0-|-1--1-- C|-0--0-|-2--2-|-0--0-|-0--0-- G|-2--2-|-3--3-|-0--0-|-2--2--
In G, the vi chord is Bm and the V can be the closed D: G 0 2 3 2 · Bm 4 2 2 2 · C 0 0 0 3 · D 2 2 2 5.
A|-2--2-|-2--2-|-3--3-|-5--5-- E|-3--3-|-2--2-|-0--0-|-2--2-- C|-2--2-|-2--2-|-0--0-|-2--2-- G|-0--0-|-4--4-|-0--0-|-2--2--
Two strums per chord. Form the barre on the last strum of the chord before it, not after the beat — the change happens in the air, not on the strings.
Building it over a week
Barre strength is a matter of weeks, not of trying harder today. A progression that works:
- Two strings first. Barre only E and A at fret 1 and strum those two. Nothing else. When both ring, add the middle and ring fingers to make Bb.
- Hold and release. Form Bb, strum once, lift the whole hand off, form it again. Ten times. Forming it is the skill; holding it is just endurance.
- Move it up. Play the shape at fret 5 or 7 first — the strings press down more easily up there, so you feel a clean barre sooner and know what to aim for lower down.
- Then put it in a change. F to Bb and back, slowly, one strum each. A barre you can only find from a standing start is not usable in a song yet.
Stop when your hand aches rather than pushing through it — two short sessions a day beat one long one, and a strained fretting hand costs a week. The map of what these grips become is on Movable shapes, where you can slide them and hear it.
Ready when
Move on when all of these are true on a normal day, not your best one:
- B♭ and Bm ring on a string-by-string check, every string clear.
- A full barre at fret 2 rings on its own, and you can add the pinky for D, Dmaj7 and D7 without lifting it.
- F · B♭ · C · F and G · Bm · C · D at 80 bpm with no gap at the barre.
