Lesson 100: What You Can Read
Index · Lesson 99: What the Endings Do
One hundred lessons are the path. The case drill is still छात्र, छात्रा, and पुस्तकम्. Every other column is a likeness of one of those, or a column that was taught on its own and then reused.
You can read a sentence that has a subject, an object, a with-form, a for-form, a from-form, an of-form, an in-form, and a call. You can read भवति, करोति, ददाति, गृह्णाति, जानाति, a middle verb, a passive, a participle, an absolutive, an infinitive, a gerundive, an optative, मा स्म with a command, and a causative. You can read two of गुरु, अग्नि, नदी, and पितृ. You can read इदम्, एतद्, यः, सर्व, सखा, पतिः, गौः, कर्म, राजा, मनः, and वाक्. You can read a compound of the four kinds in Lessons 75 through 79, and a śloka quarter of eight syllables. Lessons 101 through 116 open the joined line, and the verse word sets hold the words that return.
The word list is the lookup. The word sets are the days, the months, the birds, the festivals, and the other groups. The chants are lines to say whole. The later list is what is still not a lesson.
A last paragraph, with nothing new in it:
हे गुरो, अहं भवतः शिष्यः अस्मि। प्रतिदिनम् अहं पठितुं शक्नोमि। यः पठति सः जानाति। यदि भवान् आगच्छेत् तदा अहं तुष्येयम्। गुरवे नमः।
| Sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|
| अहं भवतः शिष्यः अस्मि। | I am your pupil. म तपाईंको शिष्य हुँ। |
| प्रतिदिनम् अहं पठितुं शक्नोमि। | Every day I can read. प्रतिदिनम् keeps म् because अहं starts with a vowel. |
| यः पठति सः जानाति। | Whoever reads knows. |
| गुरवे नमः। | A bow to the teacher. |
Practice
- Read the paragraph aloud.
- Name the lesson of करोति, of गत्वा, of यः, and of राजपुत्रः.
- Open the later list and see what is still ahead.

Lesson 101: The Joined Quarter opens a joined quarter. The verse word sets are the words those ślokas repeat. The later list still holds the full perfect, the full aorist, and the dual of a consonant stem. This book still writes सः, गुरुः, and the words apart, except for ं where a final म् meets a consonant.
