Lesson 110: He Said
Index · Lesson 109: Say, and Know · Lesson 111: I Shall Release
A śloka is often introduced by one word for “he said.” That word is not अब्रवीत् every time, and it is not the past of Lesson 18: The Past. Learn these as wholes. The other persons of this tense wait on the later list.
| Form | Meaning |
|---|---|
| उवाच | he said. From वच्, “say.” भने। Printed in front of a verse: जनकः उवाच। |
| ऊचुः | they said. भने। |
| आह | he says, or he said. The books use it as a present. भन्छ। |
| आहुः | they say. भन्छन्। |
| अब्रवीत् | he said. The past of ब्रू, one form. भने। |
| बभूव | he became, he was. From भू. भयो। |
| विदुः | they know. From lesson 109. |
The verse writes जनक उवाच. Lesson 102 opens it to जनकः उवाच. This book writes the visarga.
श्रीभगवान् means “the blessed lord,” श्रीभगवान्. The subject follows धनवान्, from Lesson 81: Having Wealth. Other endings of this name follow that column.
