Lesson 85: When the Sun Has Set
Index · Lesson 84: Than the Teacher · Lesson 86: He Says This
A noun in the in-form, with a describing word in the same in-form, can name the time of the other clause. School calls this the locative absolute. गतः, “gone,” from Lesson 17: Gone and Studied, has the in-form गते, like छात्रे.
सूर्ये अस्तं गते means “when the sun has set.” सूर्ये is “in the sun,” used here as the time-holder. अस्तम् means “setting,” and it is written अस्तं before गते. गते matches सूर्ये.
गुरौ गते means “when the teacher has gone.”
