1.45
सूक्ष्मविषयत्वं चालिङ्गपर्यवसानम्
sūkṣma-viṣayatvaṃ cāliṅga-paryavasānam
The line
And the subtle object reaches its end in the unmarked.
नेपालीमा
अनि सूक्ष्म विषय अलिङ्गमा अन्त हुन्छ।
Where it sits
1.44 said the object of reflection is subtle. This line puts a far end on “subtle.” Beyond the subtle is the unmarked, aliṅga (अलिङ्ग), which 2.19 will list as the last level of the guṇas (गुण). You do not need that list yet. You need the direction: subtle does not go on forever.
Split: sūkṣma (सूक्ष्म) + viṣayatvam (विषयत्वम्) + ca (च) + aliṅga (अलिङ्ग) + paryavasānam (पर्यवसानम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| sūkṣma (सूक्ष्म) | stem | subtle. |
| viṣayatvam (विषयत्वम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the state of being an object. -tva (त्व) plus neuter -am (अम्). |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and. |
| aliṅga (अलिङ्ग) | stem | without mark. The unmarked, past even the subtle. |
| paryavasānam (पर्यवसानम्) | nominative singular, neuter | coming to rest, the end of the series. |
The phrases
sūkṣma-viṣayatvam (सूक्ष्मविषयत्वम्) is “being a subtle object.” ca aliṅga (च अलिङ्ग) is recited cāliṅga (चालिङ्ग), a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ) with the a (अ) hiding inside ca (च). The subtle object comes to rest in the unmarked.
Both nominatives are neuter -am (अम्). The line is still about the object of the samāpatti (समापत्ति), not about a new practice.
Sanskrit in this line
-tva (त्व) you met as -tvāt (त्वात्) in 1.22, “the state of.” Here it is neuter -tvam (त्वम्), “the being-an-object.” And ca (च) + a (अ) is ordinary a (अ) + a (अ), easy to miss because ca (च) looks like a separate word. ca aliṅga (च अलिङ्ग) is one sound, cāliṅga (चालिङ्ग).
Say it back
Hear cā (चा) and say which a (अ) belongs to ca (च) and which word lost its a (अ).
