2.2
समाधिभावनार्थः क्लेशतनूकरणार्थश् च
samādhi-bhāvanārthaḥ kleśa-tanūkaraṇārthaś ca
The line
It is for bringing samādhi (समाधि) about, and for making the afflictions thin.
नेपालीमा
त्यो समाधि ल्याउनका लागि हो, र क्लेशहरूलाई पातलो पार्नका लागि हो।
Where it sits
2.1 named the practice. This line names the two aims. The rest of the pāda (पाद) until the eight limbs is about the afflictions: what they are, how they produce suffering, and what ends them.
Split: samādhi (समाधि) + bhāvanā (भावना) + arthaḥ (अर्थः) + kleśa (क्लेश) + tanūkaraṇa (तनूकरण) + arthaḥ (अर्थः) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| samādhi (समाधि) | stem | samādhi (समाधि). From the first pāda (पाद). |
| bhāvanā (भावना) | stem | bringing about, cultivation. |
| arthaḥ (अर्थः) | nominative singular, masculine | for the sake of. The purpose. |
| kleśa (क्लेश) | stem | affliction. About to be listed. |
| tanūkaraṇa (तनूकरण) | stem | making thin. |
| arthaḥ (अर्थः) | nominative singular, masculine | for the sake of, again. A second purpose. |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and. |
The phrases
Two purposes, both compounds ending in arthaḥ (अर्थः), joined by ca (च). For the sake of bringing samādhi (समाधि) about, and for the sake of making the afflictions thin. bhāvanā (भावना) + artha (अर्थ) and tanūkaraṇa (तनूकरण) + artha (अर्थ) are both ā (आ) + a (अ) or a (अ) + a (अ) becoming ā (आ).
The subject is kriyā-yogaḥ (क्रियायोगः) from 2.1, not repeated. Before ca (च), the second arthaḥ (अर्थः) is recited arthaś (अर्थश्).
Sanskrit in this line
-artha (अर्थ) as a last member means “for the sake of,” the same job as -artham (अर्थम्) in 1.32, here in the masculine nominative because it agrees with yogaḥ (योगः). ca (च) joins two purposes, not two synonyms.
Say it back
Say the two sakes, and the ca (च) between them.
