3.15
क्रमान्यत्वं परिणामान्यत्वे हेतुः
kramānyatvaṃ pariṇāmānyatve hetuḥ
The line
A different sequence is the cause of a different transformation.
नेपालीमा
फरक क्रम फरक परिणामको कारण हो।
Where it sits
The last piece of the theory of change. If the sequence differs, the change differs. Saṃyama (संयम) on the three changes can therefore tell past from future, because past and future are different sequences of the same bearer. That is 3.16.
Split: krama (क्रम) + anyatvam (अन्यत्वम्) + pariṇāma (परिणाम) + anyatve (अन्यत्वे) + hetuḥ (हेतुः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| krama (क्रम) | stem | sequence. One thing after another. |
| anyatvam (अन्यत्वम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the state of being different. A different sequence. |
| pariṇāma (परिणाम) | stem | transformation. |
| anyatve (अन्यत्वे) | locative singular | when the transformation is different. In a difference of change. |
| hetuḥ (हेतुः) | nominative singular, masculine | the cause. |
The phrases
A different sequence is the cause of a different transformation. krama (क्रम) + anyatva (अन्यत्व) and pariṇāma (परिणाम) + anyatva (अन्यत्व) are both a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ). The locative anyatve (अन्यत्वे) is “in the being-different of the change.” The nominative anyatvam (अन्यत्वम्) is “a different sequence.” The sequence is the cause.
Sanskrit in this line
-tva (त्व) again, “the state of being other,” once nominative -am (अम्) and once locative -e (ए). The line is a small causal sentence: this state is the cause, in that state. Find which -tva (त्व) is the cause and which is the situation.
Say it back
Point at the cause. It is the different sequence, kramānyatvam (क्रमान्यत्वम्).
