The line

From saṃyama (संयम) on the three transformations, knowledge of past and future.

तीन परिणाममा संयमबाट भूत र भविष्यको ज्ञान हुन्छ।

Where it sits

The theory of change becomes a practice. 3.17 is the next application: word, object, and idea, pulled apart. The powers are applications of 3.4, not a new yoga.

Split: pariṇāma (परिणाम) + traya (त्रय) + saṃyamāt (संयमात्) + atīta (अतीत) + anāgata (अनागत) + jñānam (ज्ञानम्)

The phrases

From saṃyama (संयम) on the three transformations, knowledge of past and future. saṃyamāt (संयमात्) before the vowel is recited saṃyamād (संयमाद्), t (त्) becoming d (द्). atīta (अतीत) + anāgata (अनागत) is a (अ) + a (अ) = ā (आ).

This is the pattern of the powers. Ablative saṃyamāt (संयमात्), “from saṃyama (संयम) on,” plus a nominative knowledge. Learn the pattern here. The later lines will often leave saṃyama (संयम) understood and only name the object.

Sanskrit in this line

Ablative -āt (आत्) with a final t (त्) before a vowel becoming d (द्). You know both. saṃyamāt (संयमात्) is the word to hear in every power line, even when a later line omits it and only gives the object in the locative.

Say it back

Say the pattern in skeleton form: from saṃyama (संयम) on X, knowledge of Y. Then fill X and Y for this line.

Next

3.17. Word, object, and idea are laid over one another and mixed. From saṃyama on telling them apart, knowledge of the cries of every being.
