1.2.16

Nyāya Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.16

न तदर्थान्तरभावात्

na tad arthāntarabhāvāt

The line

That identification does not hold, because the one quibble is a different thing from the other.

त्यो एकै ठान्नु मिल्दैन, किनकि एउटा छल अर्कोभन्दा फरक कुरा हो।

Where it sits

tat supplies the identification in 1.2.15. na is the answer to it. vākchala (वाक्छल) and upacāracchala (उपचारच्छल) remain the two things declared different.

Split: na (न) + tat (तत्) + artha-antara-bhāvāt (अर्थ-अन्तर-भावात्)

artha-antara-bhāvāt (अर्थ-अन्तर-भावात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause of being a different thing

The phrases

na rejects the identification. tat is the claim that upacāracchala (उपचारच्छल) is nothing but vākchala (वाक्छल).

The ground is arthāntarabhāva (अर्थान्तरभाव), the same formation used when the four tenets were said to be different. Verbal quibble builds a second lexical meaning of an unspecified word. Figurative quibble denies the reality of a property that was stated by transfer. The thing each one does is different, so the kinds stay two.

Sanskrit in this line

arthāntarabhāvāt (अर्थान्तरभावात्) is the same ablative pattern as in 1.1.27. tat before a vowel is recited tad. The line is complete only if tat is heard as the previous claim.
