Nyāya Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.7

यस्मात् प्रकरणचिन्ता स निर्णयार्थमपदिष्टः प्रकरणसमः

yasmāt prakaraṇacintā sa nirṇayārtham apadiṣṭaḥ prakaraṇasamaḥ

The line

The reason equal to the topic is that which, adduced for the sake of a decision, is itself a ground of further deliberation on the topic.

नेपालीमा

विषयसरहको हेतु त्यो हो जुन निर्णयका लागि दिइन्छ र आफैँ विषयमा थप विचारको आधार बन्छ।

Where it sits

prakaraṇasama (प्रकरणसम) from 1.2.4 is the seeming reason being defined. nirṇaya (निर्णय) from 1.1.41 is the decision this reason fails to produce.

Split: yasmāt (यस्मात्) + prakaraṇa-cintā (प्रकरण-चिन्ता) + saḥ (सः) + nirṇaya-artham (निर्णय-अर्थम्) + apadiṣṭaḥ (अपदिष्टः) + prakaraṇasamaḥ (प्रकरणसमः)

prakaraṇasamaḥ (प्रकरणसमः)nominative singular, masculinethe reason that is level with the topic

The phrases

A reason is stated, apadiṣṭa (अपदिष्ट), and the aim of stating it is nirṇaya (निर्णय). Instead of a decision, what arises is prakaraṇacintā (प्रकरणचिन्ता), a fresh thinking-over of the very topic.

The reason is sama, level with the topic. It is as undecided as the question it was brought in to close. Both sides can lean on a ground of that strength, so neither side moves. yasmāt (यस्मात्) correlates with saḥ (सः).

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) file writes nirṇayārthamapadiṣṭaḥ (निर्णयार्थमपदिष्टः) as one word. The accusative ending of artham shows two words, nirṇayārtham (निर्णयार्थम्) and apadiṣṭaḥ (अपदिष्टः). An ordinary compound would have joined artha and apadiṣṭa (अपदिष्ट) as arthāpadiṣṭa (अर्थापदिष्ट). saḥ (सः) before n is recited sa.

Say it back

Gloss prakaraṇasama (प्रकरणसम) as a reason that returns the topic to cintā (चिन्ता).
