1.1.11
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.11
गतिसामान्यात्
gatisāmānyāt
The line
Because the process matches the other teachings of a conscious cause, this cause is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
नेपालीमा
यो क्रम चेतन कारणका अरू शिक्षाहरूसँग मिल्ने भएकाले यो कारण ब्रह्म हो।
Where it sits
The denial of aśabdam (अशब्दम्) from 1.1.5 is still in force. gati is the creation-order of the Śvetaketu (श्वेतकेतु) passage, set beside the same order elsewhere.
Split: gati-sāmānyāt (गति-सामान्यात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| gati-sāmānyāt (गति-सामान्यात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because the going, the process, is the same |
The phrases
gati here is the way the world comes out: a first, then a next, heat and water and food, or the same steps under other names. sāmānya (सामान्य) is sameness.
Other sentences that no one can give to an unsentient nature tell the same coming forth from a being that thought. This passage belongs with those, not with an inference to the pradhāna (प्रधान).
Sanskrit in this line
sāmānya (सामान्य) is neuter, so the ablative is -āt (-आत्). The compound is a tatpuruṣa (तत्पुरुष): sameness of the gati.
Say it back
Say that gati here is the order of coming forth, not a path of the dead.
