1.1.16
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.16
मान्त्रवर्णिकमेव च गीयते
māntravarṇikam eva ca gīyate
The line
And the very same one is sung in the words of the mantra.

र उही एक मन्त्रका शब्दमा गाइएको छ।
Where it sits
The subject is still ānandamayaḥ (आनन्दमयः) of 1.1.13, now identified with the brahman (ब्रह्मन्) of the mantra that opens that chapter. ca continues the reasons.
Split: māntra-varṇikam (मान्त्र-वर्णिकम्) + eva (एव) + ca (च) + gīyate (गीयते)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| māntra-varṇikam (मान्त्र-वर्णिकम्) | nominative singular, neuter | what belongs to the wording of the mantra |
| eva (एव) | indeclinable | the very same, just that |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| gīyate (गीयते) | present passive, third person singular | is sung |
The phrases
The Taittirīya (तैत्तिरीय) states the sheaths in the brāhmaṇa (ब्राह्मण) prose. Before that, the mantra says the real, knowledge, the endless, is brahman (ब्रह्मन्), and sings the person from whom all this comes. eva says the blissful one of the prose is that same one.
gīyate (गीयते) is 'is sung', the verb for mantra. A modification inside a sheath is not what a creation-hymn sings as the source.
Sanskrit in this line
The pāṭha (पाठ) writes māntravarṇikameva (मान्त्रवर्णिकमेव) as one string. Split eva off. varṇika (वर्णिक) is 'having the varṇa (वर्ण), the wording'. The neuter -am agrees with brahman (ब्रह्मन्), not with the masculine mayaḥ (मयः), because the line is saying 'that very brahman (ब्रह्मन्) of the mantra is what is sung'.
Say it back
Say that the mantra and the prose are being tied to one brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
