Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.21
अन्तस् तद्धर्मोपदेशात्
antas taddharmopadeśāt
The line
The inner person is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्), because the attributes of Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) are what the text teaches of him.
नेपालीमा
भित्रको पुरुष ब्रह्म हो, किनकि पाठले उसमा ब्रह्मका गुण सिकाउँछ।
Where it sits
A new passage. brahman (ब्रह्मन्) from 1.1.1 is the predicate still in force, by the agreement of 1.1.4. Śaṅkara (शङ्कर) takes these attributes as marks for a meditation on Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) with qualities, not as a full account of his nature. Rāmānuja (रामानुज) and Madhva take the attributes as real.
Split: antaḥ (अन्तः) + tad-dharma-upadeśāt (तद्-धर्म-उपदेशात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| antaḥ (अन्तः) | nominative singular, masculine | the inner one |
| tad-dharma-upadeśāt (तद्-धर्म-उपदेशात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because the attributes of that, of Brahman (ब्रह्मन्), are taught |
The phrases
The passage is the Chāndogya (छान्दोग्य) person seen inside the sun, golden, and the person of the same form inside the eye. He is said to rule the worlds beyond, and the desires of the gods. Those are not the attributes of the soul who merely sees.
antaḥ (अन्तः) is that inner person. tad-dharma (धर्म) means attributes that belong to brahman (ब्रह्मन्): rule, and a standing above the worlds. upadeśa (उपदेश) is the text's teaching of them. The word denotes brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
Sanskrit in this line
antaḥ (अन्तः) before t is recited antas. dharma (धर्म) plus upadeśa (उपदेश) keeps a single d in this compound's ordinary spelling, but after a short vowel inside tad the d is heard double in sandhi of tat plus dharma (धर्म): taddharma. The line as recited is antas taddharmopadeśāt (तद्धर्मोपदेशात्).
Say it back
Name the place: inside the sun, and inside the eye. Say that the attributes do the identifying.
