1.1.22
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.22
भेदव्यपदेशाच् चान्यः
bhedavyapadeśāc cānyaḥ
The line
And because a difference is stated, the inner one is other than the individual soul.
नेपालीमा
र भेद भनिएकाले भित्रको जीवात्माभन्दा अर्को हो।
Where it sits
antaḥ (अन्तः) from 1.1.21 is the subject of anyaḥ (अन्यः). The same bheda-vyapadeśa (भेद-व्यपदेश) pattern was used at 1.1.18 for a different passage. Do not mix the two texts.
Split: bheda-vyapadeśāt (भेद-व्यपदेशात्) + ca (च) + anyaḥ (अन्यः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| bheda-vyapadeśāt (भेद-व्यपदेशात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because a difference is stated |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| anyaḥ (अन्यः) | nominative singular, masculine | other |
The phrases
The person in the eye is connected with the one who sees, but the text sets him over that one: ruler, and the one whose form in the sun is not the passing soul. bheda is that stated difference.
anyaḥ (अन्यः) is the conclusion. He is other than the embodied soul. The word anyaḥ (अन्यः) needs a subject, and the subject is antaḥ (अन्तः) from the previous line.
Sanskrit in this line
ca plus anyaḥ (अन्यः): a plus a becomes ā (आ), recited cānyaḥ (चान्यः). Before ca, t is heard as c.
Say it back
Say anyaḥ (अन्यः) as 'other than the soul in the eye', with antaḥ (अन्तः) understood.
