1.2.6
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.6
स्मृतेश् च
smṛteś ca
The line
And because smṛti (स्मृति) teaches the same, the being in the heart is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
नेपालीमा
र स्मृतिले त्यही सिकाएकाले हृदयमा रहेको ब्रह्म हो।
Where it sits
The śāṇḍilya-self of 1.2.1 is still the subject. smṛti (स्मृति) is support, not an independent pramāṇa (प्रमाण) that could replace the Upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) sentence.
Split: smṛteḥ (स्मृतेः) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| smṛteḥ (स्मृतेः) | ablative singular, feminine | because of remembered tradition |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
The phrases
smṛti (स्मृति) is the tradition that is remembered, as against śruti (श्रुति) that is heard. It places the lord in the heart of all, small among the small and great among the great.
ca adds this memory to the word of the previous line. It does not start a new passage. It confirms the one already identified.
Sanskrit in this line
smṛti (स्मृति) is feminine. The ablative smṛteḥ (स्मृतेः) before ca is recited smṛteś (स्मृतेश्) ca.
Say it back
Say smṛti (स्मृति) as a confirming memory of the one in the heart, smaller and greater.
