1.2.5
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.5
शब्दविशेषात्
śabdaviśeṣāt
The line
Because of a specific word, the being made of mind is Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
नेपालीमा
विशेष शब्दका कारण मनमय ब्रह्म हो।
Where it sits
The subject is still the being of 1.2.1. The word is inside Śāṇḍilya (शाण्डिल्य)'s teaching, the same sentence that said 'all this is brahman (ब्रह्मन्)'.
Split: śabda-viśeṣāt (शब्द-विशेषात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| śabda-viśeṣāt (शब्द-विशेषात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of a particular word |
The phrases
The passage says 'this is my self within the heart' and 'this is brahman (ब्रह्मन्)'. The particular word is brahman (ब्रह्मन्), or the self said in that full sense. viśeṣa (विशेष) is the specification that cuts off the vague reading.
A word the text itself spends is stronger than the guess that anything inside the heart is the soul.
Sanskrit in this line
viśeṣa (विशेष) is masculine. The compound is 'a viśeṣa (विशेष) consisting in a śabda (शब्द)', or 'a particular śabda (शब्द)'. One ablative.
Say it back
Quote the specifying word you are using: brahman (ब्रह्मन्), said of the self in the heart.

1.2.6. Smṛti (स्मृति) says the same of the one in the heart.
