1.3.3
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.3
नानुमानमतच्छब्दात् प्राणभृच् च
nānumānam atacchabdāt prāṇabhṛc ca
The line
The inferred pradhāna (प्रधान) is not the abode, because the word does not fit it, and the abode is also what holds the living.
नेपालीमा
अनुमान गरिएको प्रधान आश्रय होइन, किनकि शब्द त्यसमा मिल्दैन, र आश्रय जीवलाई धारण गर्ने पनि हो।
Where it sits
The āyatana (आयतन) of 1.3.1 is the subject of which anumānam (अनुमानम्) is denied. prāṇabhṛt (प्राणभृत्) is a further name of that same abode, not a new topic.
Split: na (न) + anumānam (अनुमानम्) + atad-śabdāt (अतद्-शब्दात्) + prāṇa-bhṛt (प्राण-भृत्) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| na (न) | indeclinable | not |
| anumānam (अनुमानम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the inferred, the pradhāna (प्रधान) |
| atad-śabdāt (अतद्-शब्दात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because the word is not the word for that |
| prāṇa-bhṛt (प्राण-भृत्) | nominative singular, masculine | what bears the living, what holds breath |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
The phrases
anumāna (अनुमान) is the pradhāna (प्रधान), reached by inference rather than by a sentence. na denies it of the abode. atad-śabda (अतद्-शब्द): the word used is ātman (आत्मन्), which is not the pradhāna (प्रधान)'s word.
ca adds a second nominative under the same teaching: it is also prāṇabhṛt (प्राणभृत्), that in which mind and all breaths are woven. The pradhāna (प्रधान) is not the holder of the living in this verse. The pāṭha (पाठ) keeps prāṇabhṛt (प्राणभृत्) in this line, not as a separate sūtra (सूत्र).
Sanskrit in this line
na plus a is nā (ना). atad-śabda (अतद्-शब्द) is 'a word that is not tad's word'. prāṇabhṛt (प्राणभृत्) before ca is recited prāṇabhṛc (प्राणभृच्). bhṛt (भृत्) is an agent noun from bhṛ (भृ), 'to bear'.
Say it back
Say the two reasons in order: wrong word, and holder of breaths.
