1.3.4

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.4

भेदव्यपदेशात्

bhedavyapadeśāt

The line

Because a difference is stated, the abode is not the pradhāna (प्रधान).

नेपालीमा

भेद भनिएकाले आश्रय प्रधान होइन।

Where it sits

The denial of anumānam (अनुमानम्) in 1.3.3 is still in force. This ablative is one more reason. The same compound bheda-vyapadeśa (भेद-व्यपदेश) has been used before, of other passages. Here the difference is weaver and woven, or bridge and the one who resorts to it.

Split: bheda-vyapadeśāt (भेद-व्यपदेशात्)

The words

WordGrammarSense
bheda-vyapadeśāt (भेद-व्यपदेशात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause a difference is stated

The phrases

The verse distinguishes the abode from heaven, earth, mind, and breaths woven in it, and distinguishes the bridge from the one who would cross by knowing. bheda is that difference.

A pradhāna (प्रधान) identical with its effects, in the objector's flat reading, is not stated as other than what is woven. The statement of difference keeps the abode as brahman (ब्रह्मन्), the support, not as the Sāṃkhya (सांख्य) stuff.

Sanskrit in this line

One ablative, no ca. The reason stands alone as a new sentence in the series.

Say it back

Say the two terms of the difference: the one in whom they are woven, and they.

1.3.5. The context is the higher knowledge, which is about Brahman (ब्रह्मन्).
