Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.43

सुषुप्त्युत्क्रान्त्योर् भेदेन

suṣuptyutkrāntyor bhedena

The line

Because it is distinguished from the self of deep sleep and of departure, this space is not the individual soul.

गाढा निद्रा र प्रस्थानको आत्माबाट छुट्याइएकाले यो आकाश जीवात्मा होइन।

Where it sits

ākāśaḥ (आकाशः) from 1.3.42 is the one distinguished. The sleeper and the departing one are the itara, the rival. The difference is in the same teaching, which speaks of both the space and the soul's going.

Split: suṣupti-utkrāntyoḥ (सुषुप्ति-उत्क्रान्त्योः) + bhedena (भेदेन)

The phrases

The individual soul is the one the texts follow into deep sleep, suṣupti (सुषुप्ति), and at the leaving of the body, utkrānti (उत्क्रान्ति). Those are his marks.

This space is stated with a difference, bhedena, from that one. It is the giver of name and form, the deathless, not the sleeper and not the one who departs. The genitive dual is 'as against these two'.

Sanskrit in this line

Two feminine nouns, genitive dual -oḥ (-ओः). bhedena is instrumental of bheda, 'with a difference'. No verb. The instrumental is the reason.

Say it back

Name the two states that belong to the soul, and say the space is set apart from both.
