ज्योतिषा एकेषामसत्यन्ने

jyotiṣā ekeṣām asaty anne

The line

Among some, when food is absent, the count is made by light.

नेपालीमा

केहीमा अन्न नहुँदा गणना ज्योतिले गरिन्छ।

Where it sits

The five of 1.4.12 are still being filled in. jyotis replaces anna in one recension. The conclusion of 1.4.11, that the number is not the pradhāna (प्रधान), is untouched.

Split: jyotiṣā (ज्योतिषा) + ekeṣām (एकेषाम्) + asati (असति) + anne (अन्ने)

The words

WordGrammarSense
jyotiṣā (ज्योतिषा)instrumental singular, neuterby light, with the word light
ekeṣām (एकेषाम्)genitive plural, masculineamong some reciters
asati (असति)locative singular, neuterwhen it is absent
anne (अन्ने)locative singular, neuterwhen food is absent

The phrases

ekeṣām (एकेषाम्) are some reciters, the Kāṇva (काण्व) wording being the one cited for this. asati anne is a locative absolute: when food is not in the verse. In that wording, jyotiṣā (ज्योतिषा), by means of the word light, the five are completed.

The count still comes out as the passage's own items. A variant word, light instead of food, does not turn the five into the pradhāna (प्रधान). The same self is the one in whom they are established.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) joins jyotiṣaikeṣām (ज्योतिषैकेषाम्) asatyanne. Split jyotiṣā (ज्योतिषा), ekeṣām (एकेषाम्), asati, anne. ā (आ) plus e becomes ai: jyotiṣā (ज्योतिषा) ekeṣām (एकेषाम्) is recited jyotiṣaikeṣām (ज्योतिषैकेषाम्). asati plus anne is asaty anne, i plus a becoming ya.

Say it back

Note the variant and move on. Light or food, the list is not the twenty-five.
