1.4.12
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.12
प्राणादयो वाक्यशेषात्
prāṇādayo vākyaśeṣāt
The line
Breath and the rest are what the number covers, because of the rest of the sentence.
नेपालीमा
सङ्ख्याले प्राण र अरूलाई समेट्छ, वाक्यको बाँकी भागका कारण।
Where it sits
The five-groups passage of 1.4.11 is still the text. vākya-śeṣa (वाक्य-शेष) is the complementary wording of that same passage. The pradhāna (प्रधान) remains denied.
Split: prāṇa-ādayaḥ (प्राण-आदयः) + vākya-śeṣāt (वाक्य-शेषात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| prāṇa-ādayaḥ (प्राण-आदयः) | nominative plural, masculine | breath and the others |
| vākya-śeṣāt (वाक्य-शेषात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of the remainder of the sentence |
The phrases
The objector's twenty-five have to be something. The remainder of the passage, vākya-śeṣa (वाक्य-शेष), names them from breath onward, the powers and elements the Upaniṣad (उपनिषद्) actually lists, not the Sāṃkhya (सांख्य) ladder from pradhāna (प्रधान) to the gross elements.
prāṇa-ādayaḥ (प्राण-आदयः) is that list. Once the remainder is read, the number is a number of Vedic items established in the self. It is not a census of the pradhāna (प्रधान)'s products.
Sanskrit in this line
prāṇa (प्राण) plus ādayaḥ (आदयः): a plus ā (आ) becomes ā (आ), recited prāṇādayaḥ (प्राणादयः), the visarga dropped before v. śeṣa (शेष) is 'the remainder'.
Say it back
Say that the number is filled by the passage's own list, which starts at breath.
