1.4.26

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.26

आत्मकृतेः

ātmakṛteḥ

The line

Because the text says he made himself, Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) is the material cause.

Where it sits

prakṛtiḥ (प्रकृतिः) from 1.4.23 is the conclusion this ablative supports. The sentence is the Taittirīya (तैत्तिरीय)'s 'he made himself', after 'may I be many'. This pāṭha (पाठ) gives the making its own line. The modification is the next line.

The words

WordGrammarSense
ātma-kṛteḥ (आत्म-कृतेः)ablative singular, femininebecause of the making of himself, because he is said to have made himself

The phrases

The Taittirīya (तैत्तिरीय) says he made himself. The self is both the maker and what is made. kṛti (कृति) is the making. ātman (आत्मन्) is its object and its agent.

That is material cause in one verb. A maker who works on foreign stuff does not 'make himself' into the world. The ablative is the reason. The conclusion, that he is prakṛti (प्रकृति), is still the conclusion of 1.4.23.

Sanskrit in this line

kṛti (कृति) is feminine, ablative -eḥ (-एः). ātma-kṛti (आत्म-कृति) is 'a making of the self', or 'the self's making of himself'. One word.

Say it back

Say the verb: he made himself. The self is the material.
