Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.27

परिणामात्

pariṇāmāt

The line

Because of modification, Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) is the material cause.

नेपालीमा

विकारका कारण ब्रह्म उपादान कारण हो।

Where it sits

The conclusion is still prakṛtiḥ (प्रकृतिः) of 1.4.23, and the making of 1.4.26 is the sentence this word describes. This pāṭha (पाठ) gives pariṇāma (परिणाम) its own line. Śaṅkara (शङ्कर) takes the word as the text's name for an effect that is not a second reality and does not alter Brahman (ब्रह्मन्). Rāmānuja (रामानुज) takes it as a real change of the body of Brahman (ब्रह्मन्). Madhva does not take it as a change of Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) at all.

The words

WordGrammarSense
pariṇāmāt (परिणामात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause of modification, because it is said to change forth

The phrases

pariṇāma (परिणाम) is a changing forth, milk to curd, the cause coming out as the effect. The texts that say he made himself, and that say the real became the articulated and the unarticulated, are talking in that way.

The ablative is one more reason for the same conclusion. He is the material, because the effect is described as his modification.

Sanskrit in this line

pariṇāma (परिणाम) is masculine, from pari plus nam, 'to bend aside, to turn out as'. One ablative. The subject is not repeated.

Say it back

Gloss pariṇāma (परिणाम) as the text's word for the cause coming forth as the effect, and remember the three do not take the change the same way.
