ज्योतिरुपक्रमा तु तथा ह्यधीयते एके

jyotir upakramā tu tathā hy adhīyate eke

The line

But what is meant is the set that begins with light, for some recite it so.

नेपालीमा

तर भनिएको ज्योतिबाट सुरु हुने समूह हो, किनकि कसैले त्यसरी पढाउँछन्।

Where it sits

The unborn of 1.4.8 is the subject. The colors are decided by the Chāndogya (छान्दोग्य) teaching of red, white, and black, which Śvetaketu (श्वेतकेतु) was given. The three agree on this against the strands.

Split: jyotiḥ-upakramā (ज्योतिः-उपक्रमा) + tu (तु) + tathā (तथा) + hi (हि) + adhīyate (अधीयते) + eke (एके)

The phrases

tu gives the positive reading of the unborn. In the Chāndogya (छान्दोग्य) the three colors are taught of fire, water, and food: red is the light, white the water, black the food. That set begins with light, jyotiḥ-upakramā (ज्योतिः-उपक्रमा).

eke, some reciters, recite the colors that way. hi and tathā (तथा): for so it is recited. The unborn of three colors is those elements, from which offspring come, not the three strands. The primary colors in the Chāndogya (छान्दोग्य) are colors of elements. The strands would be a second, borrowed sense.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) writes adhīyata (अधीयत), one vowel short, and joins jyotirupakramā (ज्योतिरुपक्रमा). The word is adhīyate (अधीयते), 'is recited', and jyotiḥ-upakramā (ज्योतिः-उपक्रमा) is a separate nominative, feminine, agreeing with the recitation or the set. jyotiḥ (ज्योतिः) before a vowel is jyotir.

Say it back

Tie the three colors to fire, water, and food, not to the three strands.
