1.4.10

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.10

कल्पनोपदेशाच् च मध्वादिवदविरोधः

kalpanopadeśāc ca madhvādivad avirodhaḥ

The line

And because a meditative construction is taught, there is no conflict, as with the honey and similar passages.

नेपालीमा

र ध्यानको रचना सिकाइएकाले द्वन्द्व छैन, जस्तै मधु र त्यस्तै पाठमा।

Where it sits

The unborn of 1.4.8 remains the subject. madhu points back to the honey-teaching of 1.3.30, used here only as a familiar case of symbolic language. The pradhāna (प्रधान) stays out.

Split: kalpanā-upadeśāt (कल्पना-उपदेशात्) + ca (च) + madhu-ādi-vat (मधु-आदि-वत्) + avirodhaḥ (अविरोधः)

The phrases

kalpanā (कल्पना) is a made form, a way of regarding one thing as another for meditation. The colors, the unborn, the offspring, can be a kalpanā (कल्पना) of that kind. upadeśa (उपदेश) is the teaching of it.

madhu-ādi-vat (मधु-आदि-वत्): like the honey of the gods, where the sun is called honey and no one thinks the text is a treatise on bees. avirodha: there is no conflict in taking the verse as elements, or as a meditation-form built on them, rather than as the pradhāna (प्रधान). ca adds this to the recitation that begins with light.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) joins madhvādivadavirodhaḥ (मध्वादिवदविरोधः). Split madhu-ādi-vat (मधु-आदि-वत्) from avirodhaḥ (अविरोधः). kalpanā (कल्पना) is feminine. Before ca, t is heard as c. -vat before a vowel becomes -vad.

Say it back

Say kalpanā (कल्पना) as 'a form made for meditation', with the honey as the example.
