Purāṇa / The eighteen / Garuḍa Purāṇa

Garuḍa Purāṇa (गरुडपुराण)

About 19,000 verses in the traditional lists. Sattva in the Padma Purāṇa's sorting. Neither figure is this shelf's own measurement.

About nineteen thousand verses in the lists, sattva in the Padma sorting. Garuḍa is Viṣṇu's bird, and the book is spoken to him. What most readers mean by the name is the part about death. A person dies. A course follows. Yama's hall is a court. The preta, the one who has gone, walks a road the book describes with a moral seriousness and, in places, a taste for terror. This page keeps the picture and refuses the use. It does not give the counts of śrāddha, the days, the offerings, or any rite by which a living person is told to manage the dead. Those lists exist in the book. They do not leave this page.

The rest of the Garuḍa is less famous and just as encyclopedic. Gems, omens, medicine-names, vows, summaries of dharma. The same rule applies. A name of a stone or a remedy is not advice. The shelf records that the book is a compendium pretending, in its most read chapters, to be a single subject, the afterlife.

The teaching worth keeping is the picture behind the terror. What you did walks with you. Yama, in the better of these pages, is not a monster inventing punishments. He is the king of a consequence that was already chosen. The memorable takeaway is that sentence, stripped of the apparatus. A life is not over at the last breath in this book's world. It is also not a riddle this page will help anyone perform.

What it tells

The road after death; Yama's hall; the preta; and, around that, an encyclopedia of gems, omens, and dharma-summaries.

The teaching

Consequence has a king. The picture is moral. It is not a manual, and this page will not make it one.

What a reader keeps

A line

A line people recite from this book is not sat here. The shelf does not print a verse it has not checked.

Where it sits

Death in the epics is a scene, not a rite. The Mokṣadharma is the other shelf's long conversation about leaving.
