Nārada Purāṇa (नारदपुराण)

About 25,000 verses in the traditional lists. Sattva in the Padma Purāṇa's sorting. Neither figure is this shelf's own measurement.

About twenty-five thousand verses in the lists, sattva in the Padma sorting. Nārada is the devotee who does not stay, the sage whose vocation is to arrive in other people's stories and start them. A purāṇa in his name behaves like him. It travels. It summarizes other books. It contains a telling of Rāma's story in epitome, and a great deal of tīrtha, vow, and the praise of the Bhāgavata. A reader who wants one myth will be frustrated. A reader who wants a guide to a library will recognize the genre.

The book's devotional center is the name of Viṣṇu and the claim that hearing and singing are themselves the practice, not the preface to a practice. It sends the reader onward. Read the Bhāgavata. Walk this place. Keep this month. The shelf does not turn those sendings into a vow-manual. It notes that a purāṇa can be a door into the other purāṇas.

Nārada's other famous book is not this one. The Nārada Bhakti Sūtras are eighty-four short sūtras on divine love, sat on the darśana side of the library, beside the Gītā's twelfth chapter. Same sage, different shelf, different genre. This profile does not mix them.

What it tells

Nārada as the wanderer; an epitome of the Rāmāyaṇa; praise of the Bhāgavata; tīrtha and the month as devotion.

The teaching

Hearing and singing are the practice. A book that mostly points at other books is doing that teaching in its form.

What a reader keeps

A line

A line people recite from this book is not sat here. The shelf does not print a verse it has not checked.
