Purāṇa / The eighteen / Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa
Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa (ब्रह्माण्डपुराण)
About 12,000 verses in the traditional lists. Rajas in the Padma Purāṇa's sorting. Neither figure is this shelf's own measurement.
About twelve thousand verses in the lists, rajas in the Padma sorting. The name is the egg of Brahmā, the world as a closed shape in which the continents, the heavens, the nether regions, and the ages are arranged. It is a cosmography. A reader who has met the five topics in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa meets them here as distances and layers, a universe drawn more than argued.
In the later portion of widely read recensions there is the Lalitopākhyāna, the story of the goddess Lalitā, a Śākta narrative set inside a book the guṇa list calls rajas. The shelf names it as a recension people meet. Tradition places the Lalitā Sahasranāma (ललितासहस्रनाम), the thousand names, inside that narrative. The thousand names are not sat here, and her worship is not turned into a rite. Some readers also meet an Adhyātma Rāmāyaṇa in the orbit of this purāṇa. That poem is a teaching-Rāmāyaṇa, Rāma explaining the self as the war proceeds. Its closing talk, Rāma to Lakṣmaṇa, is the Rāma Gītā. This shelf does not treat that poem as the same book as the Brahmāṇḍa, and it does not treat it as Vālmīki. It is named so the orbit is not a confusion.
The teaching is order. An egg is a claim that the world has a shell, an inside, and a sequence. The memorable takeaway is the humility of the claim. A map of everything is still a purāṇa's map, traditional and round-numbered, not a survey. The Lalitā narrative, when the recension has it, adds what an egg-map leaves out: a goddess as the agent inside the geography.
What it tells
The cosmic egg; the continents and the ages as a map; the Lalitopākhyāna in widely read recensions.
The teaching
The world is drawn before it is argued. A goddess-narrative in some recensions is the agent inside the drawing.
What a reader keeps
- About twelve thousand, as a list-number.
- Rajas in the Padma list.
- The Adhyātma Rāmāyaṇa is a neighbor, not this book and not Vālmīki.
A line
A line people recite from this book is not sat here. The shelf does not print a verse it has not checked.
Where it sits
Vālmīki's poem is the Rāmāyaṇa chronicle. A teaching-Rāmāyaṇa in this orbit is a third thing.
