Liṅga Purāṇa (लिङ्गपुराण)

About 11,000 verses in the traditional lists. Tamas in the Padma Purāṇa's sorting. Neither figure is this shelf's own measurement.

About eleven thousand verses in the lists, tamas in the Padma sorting, which again ranks a Śaiva book by a Vaiṣṇava measure. The liṅga is the subject, not as an object-lesson in ritual but as the mark of what does not divide into form. The fire-liṅga whose ends cannot be found is told here as well as in the Śiva Purāṇa. The tradition often counts a long list of Śiva's manifestations in this book, sometimes twenty-eight. The manuscripts are not a census this shelf will freeze at that number. It records the claim and the variance.

Satī's story is here too. She gives up her body at the insult of the sacrifice. The page says that, and stops, and does not list parts. The marriage of Pārvatī, the origins of the mark's worship as a theology rather than as a manual, and the ages of the world fill the rest. This profile does not become instructions for setting up a liṅga, and it does not give measurements.

The teaching is the same undivided mark as the Śiva Purāṇa's, argued from the object outward. A reader who has understood the endless column has understood most of what this book is for. The rest is the devotion that keeps circumambulating a sign it has agreed not to finish.

What it tells

The endless liṅga; a long, unfixed list of Śiva's manifestations; Satī; the marriage.

The teaching

A mark with no end is the doctrine. Walking around it is the devotion that agrees not to finish the doctrine.

What a reader keeps

A line

A line people recite from this book is not sat here. The shelf does not print a verse it has not checked.

Where it sits

The Śiva Purāṇa hub is the other door into the same god. Paśupati is the valley's page.
