Skanda Purāṇa (स्कन्दपुराण)
About 81,100 verses in the traditional lists. Tamas in the Padma Purāṇa's sorting. Neither figure is this shelf's own measurement.
The lists call it the longest, about eighty-one thousand one hundred verses. That figure is the traditional claim, not a single manuscript a reader can pick up. What circulates are khaṇḍas and, around them, a cloud of māhātmyas that introduce themselves as Skanda. The usual seven khaṇḍas are Maheśvara, Viṣṇu, Brahma, Kāśī, Āvantya, Nāgara, and Prabhāsa. Editions differ. Tamas, in the Padma sorting, is a Vaiṣṇava rank laid on a book that is largely Śaiva geography. The rank describes the sorter. It does not describe Kāśī.
Skanda, also Kārttikeya, is born of Śiva's fire, nursed by the Kṛttikās, and becomes the commander against Tāraka. The page says he becomes the commander and that Tāraka falls. It does not describe the war. Around that birth the book does its real bulk of work, which is place. Kāśī above all, and Kedāra, Prabhāsa, and a hundred grounds whose praise traveled separately and was later shelved under this name. A māhātmya is a story that explains why a place is walked. The shelf does not convert those explanations into an itinerary or a bathing list.
The teaching is double. A young god as the courage that fights what the elders could not. And a geography as a scripture, the claim that where you are is part of what you can know. One dialogue that shelves itself under this name is the Guru Gītā, Śiva speaking to Pārvatī about the teacher. The page maps that talk and gives no chant. The memorable takeaway is the size itself. Anyone quoting eighty-one thousand as if he had counted is quoting the list. Anyone reading one khaṇḍa is reading a real book, smaller than the claim and large enough.
What it tells
Skanda's birth and the command against Tāraka; the seven khaṇḍas; Kāśī and the other māhātmyas.
The teaching
Place is a text. The young commander is the myth. The thousand local praises are the book people actually open.
What a reader keeps
- About 81,100, as the traditional claim of length, not a count you can check by heft.
- Tamas only in the Padma list.
- A māhātmya is not an itinerary.
A line
A line people recite from this book is not sat here. The shelf does not print a verse it has not checked.

Where it sits
Paśupati's valley page is separate. This book is the long geography.
