1.3.35
Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.35
उत्तरत्र चैत्ररथेन लिङ्गात्
uttaratra caitrarathena liṅgāt
The line
And later, by the mark of Caitraratha, his kṣatriya (क्षत्रिय) status is known.
नेपालीमा
र पछि चैत्ररथको चिह्नले उसको क्षत्रिय हुनु थाहा हुन्छ।
Where it sits
kṣatriyatva (क्षत्रियत्व) from 1.3.34 is what this mark confirms. uttaratra is later than the Raikva scene, not a different book. The pāṭha (पाठ) gives this line its own id, separate from the previous ablative.
Split: uttaratra (उत्तरत्र) + caitrarathena (चैत्ररथेन) + liṅgāt (लिङ्गात्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| uttaratra (उत्तरत्र) | indeclinable | later on, in a later passage |
| caitrarathena (चैत्ररथेन) | instrumental singular, masculine | by Caitraratha, by the descendant of Citraratha |
| liṅgāt (लिङ्गात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of the mark |
The phrases
uttaratra is later in the same teaching. Jānaśruti (जानश्रुति) is mentioned along with Abhipratārin (अभिप्रतारिन्) Caitraratha, a kṣatriya (क्षत्रिय) of Citraratha's line, in connection with the same knowledge. Equals are named together.
liṅga (लिङ्ग) is that mark. caitrarathena is the instrumental of the person who is the mark. The line does not retell a new story. It uses the later mention as a sign of kṣatriya (क्षत्रिय) status.
Sanskrit in this line
caitraratha is 'descendant of Citraratha', instrumental -ena. liṅga (लिङ्ग) is neuter, ablative -āt (-आत्). uttaratra is an indeclinable in -tra.
