Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3.36

संस्कारपरामर्शात् तदभावाभिलापाच् च

saṃskāraparāmarśāt tadabhāvābhilāpāc ca

The line

Because the sacrament is referred to, and because its absence is stated, this hearing is not open without it.

नेपालीमा

संस्कारको उल्लेख भएकाले र त्यसको अभाव भनिएकाले यो श्रवण त्यो बिना खुला छैन।

Where it sits

The eligibility question from 1.3.33 is still in force, now as a rule, not only as the reading of one name. Jānaśruti (जानश्रुति)'s grief-name has done its work. This line is about the sacrament.

Split: saṃskāra-parāmarśāt (संस्कार-परामर्शात्) + tad-abhāva-abhilāpāt (तद्-अभाव-अभिलापात्) + ca (च)

The phrases

saṃskāra (संस्कार) here is the sacrament that precedes Veda study, the initiation. Texts that teach this knowledge refer to that sacrament as what the student has. parāmarśa (परामर्श) is the reference.

tad-abhāva (तद्-अभाव) is the absence of that sacrament for the fourth class, and abhilāpa (अभिलाप) is the statement of the absence. The two ablatives are one argument. Hearing this Veda is tied to the sacrament. Where the sacrament is stated to be absent, this hearing is not opened. ca joins the two reasons.

Sanskrit in this line

Both nouns are masculine ablatives. abhāva (अभाव) plus abhilāpa (अभिलाप) joins. Before ca, t is heard as c: abhilāpāc (अभिलापाच्) ca.

Say it back

Gloss saṃskāra (संस्कार) as the initiation that comes before study, and abhāva (अभाव) as its stated absence.
