Where it sits
The sacrament and its absence from 1.3.36 are tat. The story is Satyakāma (सत्यकाम), a new illustration of the same rule, not a new rule.
Split: tad-abhāva-nirdhāraṇe (तद्-अभाव-निर्धारणे) + ca (च) + pravṛtteḥ (प्रवृत्तेः)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tad-abhāva-nirdhāraṇe (तद्-अभाव-निर्धारणे) | locative singular, neuter | when the absence of that has been ascertained |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and |
| pravṛtteḥ (प्रवृत्तेः) | ablative singular, feminine | because of the proceeding, the undertaking |
The phrases
The passage is Satyakāma (सत्यकाम) Jābāla (जाबाल). He says he does not know his family. Gautama, having heard how he speaks, proceeds to initiate him, once it is settled that the exclusion does not apply. nirdhāraṇa (निर्धारण) is that ascertaining. tad-abhāva (तद्-अभाव) is the absence of the disqualifying status.
pravṛtti (प्रवृत्ति) is the teacher's going ahead. He goes ahead when the absence is settled, not before. ca adds this conduct to the statements of the previous line.
Sanskrit in this line
nirdhāraṇa (निर्धारण) is neuter, locative -e, 'when it has been determined'. pravṛtti (प्रवृत्ति) is feminine, ablative -eḥ (-एः). The locative is the circumstance. The ablative is the reason.
Say it back
Tell Satyakāma (सत्यकाम)'s scene in one sentence: the teacher starts once the status is settled.
