śravaṇa-adhyayana-artha-pratiṣedhāt (श्रवण-अध्ययन-अर्थ-प्रतिषेधात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause hearing, study, and the meaning are prohibited

The phrases

Three things are named in the compound, and all three are under pratiṣedha (प्रतिषेध), prohibition. śravaṇa (श्रवण) is hearing the Veda. adhyayana is studying it, repeating it. artha is getting at its meaning, and the ritual and knowledge that depend on that meaning.

The ablative is the reason this hearing stays closed where the sacrament is absent. The line states the prohibition. It does not narrate a penalty.

Sanskrit in this line

One compound, one ablative. Read from pratiṣedha (प्रतिषेध): a prohibition, of artha, of adhyayana, and of śravaṇa (श्रवण). The gender follows pratiṣedha (प्रतिषेध), masculine.

Say it back

Say the three prohibited acts in order: hearing, study, meaning.
