1.4.11

Brahma Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.4.11

न संख्योपसंग्रहादपि ज्ञानाभावादतिरेकाच् च

na saṃkhyopasaṃgrahād api jñānābhāvād atirekāc ca

The line

Not even from the gathering of a number, because the text does not teach that pradhāna (प्रधान), and because the count runs over.

नेपालीमा

सङ्ख्या जम्मा गरेर पनि होइन, किनकि पाठले त्यो प्रधान सिकाउँदैन, र गणना नाघेर जान्छ।

Where it sits

The pradhāna (प्रधान) is still the thing denied. The passage is the five groups of five, a new sentence, not the unborn of three colors. The number is the objector's only handle.

Split: na (न) + saṃkhyā-upasaṃgrahāt (संख्या-उपसंग्रहात्) + api (अपि) + jñāna-abhāvāt (ज्ञान-अभावात्) + atirekāt (अतिरेकात्) + ca (च)

The phrases

The passage speaks of the five groups of five, and space, established in the self one should regard as brahman (ब्रह्मन्), the deathless. Five times five is twenty-five, and the objector hears the Sāṃkhya (सांख्य) number.

na, even from that gathering of a number. This pāṭha (पाठ)'s reason is jñānābhāva (ज्ञानाभाव): the text gives no knowledge of a knower-less pradhāna (प्रधान). It says to regard the self as brahman (ब्रह्मन्). And atireka: space is counted besides, or the items run past a tidy list of twenty-five. ca joins the excess to the absence.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) joins saṃkhyopasaṃgrahādapi (संख्योपसंग्रहादपि). Split api off. upasaṃgraha (उपसंग्रह) is masculine. jñāna-abhāva (ज्ञान-अभाव) is masculine. This pāṭha (पाठ) reads jñānābhāvāt (ज्ञानाभावात्). atirekāt (अतिरेकात्) before ca is atirekāc (अतिरेकाच्) ca.

Say it back

Say the objector's arithmetic: five times five is twenty-five. Then say why the arithmetic is not a system.

Next

1.4.12. The five are breath and the rest, because the rest of the passage says so.
