Sanatsujātīya (सनत्सुजातीय)
A dialogue in the Udyoga-parva, before the war. Dhṛtarāṣṭra is afraid of death. The teacher who comes is Sanatsujāta (सनत्सुजात), a mind-born son of Brahmā who does not grow old, a child because he refused the growing. In the vulgate the dialogue is chapters 41–46. The critical edition gathers the same conversation under different chapter numbers. This page follows the vulgate number, which is the number Śaṅkara's commentary is cited against. It does not pretend the critical edition prints those same numerals.
The thesis a reader is meant to leave with is small enough to say in prose. Death, as Dhṛtarāṣṭra fears it, is not a person who arrives. Death is bewilderment, moha (मोह). What knows is not what dies. The talk then turns on the Veda, on who is fit to hear, and on the kind of attention that does not hand itself to the fear. Śaṅkara wrote a bhāṣya (भाष्य) on this dialogue. That is why Vedānta reads it beside the Gītā and the Upaniṣads, even though it is an epic chapter and not a sūtra. This page's sentences are its own. They are not his commentary, and they are not a verse-by-verse sitting. The lines are not sat yet. No śloka is supplied from memory to look like the text.
Where it sits
After the war, Bhīṣma answers the same question for Yudhiṣṭhira in the Mokṣadharma. The same fear of dying is what the second chapter of the Gītā answers on the field, to a different listener. Three hours, one question. The Upaniṣads are the śruti this dialogue keeps pointing at.
