Rāma Gītā (रामगीता)
The closing teaching of the Adhyātma Rāmāyaṇa (अध्यात्मरामायण). Rāma speaks to Lakṣmaṇa. The poem around that talk is a later teaching-Rāmāyaṇa: Rāma explaining the self while the story of the war proceeds. The Brahmāṇḍa profile already places that poem in the orbit of the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, as a neighbor of that book, and as a different poem from Vālmīki. The Rāma Gītā is the hour at the end, when the explanation is gathered for the brother.
The claim is Advaita in a small compass. The self is other than the body, the senses, and the mind that worries. The world stands in consciousness the way a picture stands in the light that shows it. Knowledge is the release. Devotion, in this telling, is the affection that keeps the hearer with the teacher until the knowledge is his own. Recensions differ in how they bound the closing talk, so this page does not freeze a verse count. No śloka is supplied from memory to look like the text.
Who is the teacher
- Here Rāma teaches Lakṣmaṇa. In the Śiva Gītā, Śiva teaches Rāma. The prince changes chairs.
- The Yoga Vāsiṣṭha is the long story-teaching to the young Rāma, before any campaign, outside the seven kāṇḍas.
- Vālmīki's Uttara-kāṇḍa is the seventh book of the received poem. This dialogue is the close of another Rāma book.
- The Aṣṭāvakra Gītā says the same non-dual claim as a sage to a king, and that book is sat line by line. This one stays the map.
Where it sits
Read the seven kāṇḍas for Vālmīki's poem, and the chronicle for the walk. Read this page when the question is the later book in which Rāma is the advaitin. The Brahma Gītā is the crest of Vasiṣṭha's poem, a third Rāma-frame, with Brahmā's voice at the close.
