Aṣṭāvakra Gītā / Janaka (अध्याय ७) / 7.4

the Aṣṭāvakra Gītā (अष्टावक्र गीता)

नात्मा भावेषु नो भावस् तत्रानन्ते निरञ्जने ।
इत्यसक्तोऽस्पृहः शान्त एतदेवाहमास्थितः
nātmā bhāveṣu no bhāvas tatrānante nirañjane |
ity asakto 'spṛhaḥ śānta etad evāham āsthitaḥ

The line

The self is not in the states, and a state is not in that endless stainless one. Thus unattached, without longing, quiet: this alone is the stand I have taken.

Where it sits

Janaka is still speaking. He repeats the stand, now from the denial that the self is in the states.

Split: na (न) + ātmā (आत्मा) + bhāveṣu (भावेषु) + no (नो) + bhāvaḥ (भावः) + tatra (तत्र) + anante (अनन्ते) + nirañjane (निरञ्जने) + iti (इति) + asaktaḥ (असक्तः) + aspṛhaḥ (अस्पृहः) + śāntaḥ (शान्तः) + etat (एतत्) + eva (एव) + aham (अहम्) + āsthitaḥ (आस्थितः)

Sanskrit in this line

na plus ātmā (आत्मा) is nātmā (नात्मा). bhāvaḥ (भावः) before tatra is bhāvas (भाव), and tatra plus anante is tatrānante (तत्रानन्ते). asaktaḥ (असक्तः) before aspṛhaḥ (अस्पृहः) is asakto with the avagraha. The visarga of śāntaḥ (शान्तः) drops before e.
